“The Price of Speed”
Phil Read was the first motorcyclist to win in the 125cc, 250cc and 500cc categories. Nicknamed “The Price of Speed,” he was eight-time world motorcycle champion and is one of the biggest names in MotoGP history.
In 1964, Read achieved the title of 250cc world champion, giving Yamaha its first world victory and, the following year, repeated the feat.
After a few years away from competitions, he returned to the MotoGP circuit in 1971 and, after three victories, won his fifth world title.
Read left MotoGP championships in 1976 and started participating in Formula TT events in 1977.
The International Motorcycle Federation named him “Legend” of MotoGP in 2002.
